Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also referred to as cold laser therapy, is a growing technique in healthcare used to ease pain, reduce inflammation, and promote natural healing. Unlike high-powered surgical lasers, LLLT devices operate at a power level below 1 watt and do not generate heat, making them safe for therapeutic use.
The MicroLight system delivers 90 milliwatts of energy, which is below the threshold that would cause any tissue damage, making it ideal for applications such as laser acupuncture and soft tissue therapy.
Benefits of LLLT
Clinical research has demonstrated a wide range of biological benefits from LLLT, including:
- Stimulated collagen production
- Improved circulation and vasodilation
- Faster cellular repair and metabolism
- Enhanced nerve function and regeneration
- Reduced inflammation and pain
- Accelerated tissue and bone healing
- Boosted lymphatic flow and enzyme activity
Conditions That May Benefit from LLLT
LLLT is used around the world to address a variety of conditions, including:
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Tendonitis and bursitis
- Back and neck pain
- TMJ dysfunction
- Sciatica and nerve pain
- Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Sports injuries and muscle strains
- Migraines and fibromyalgia
How Does LLLT Work?
LLLT accelerates the body’s natural repair systems by delivering specific wavelengths of light to injured or inflamed areas. These wavelengths stimulate light-sensitive structures in cells, known as chromophores, which activate biological processes like increased circulation, reduced nerve signal transmission, and enhanced tissue regeneration.
In essence, the therapy helps reduce pain, relax muscle spasms, and improve range of motion by supporting the body’s natural healing response.
The Importance of Wavelength and Energy
The depth and effectiveness of laser treatment depend on both the laser’s wavelength and power. For example:
- Shorter red wavelengths (around 632nm) are absorbed at the skin level
- Longer infrared wavelengths (like 830nm) penetrate deeper into tissues
Devices with lower output (5–10 mW) may not deliver sufficient energy for deep tissue healing, while MicroLight’s 830nm, 30mW system is designed for optimal penetration and effectiveness.
LLLT and ATP (Cellular Energy)
Research shows that 830nm laser light stimulates the production of ATP, the primary energy source for cells. This increase in ATP enhances the body’s ability to repair and regenerate tissues, especially in deeper layers where damage may be more difficult to reach.
LLLT and Endorphin Production
Scientific studies have also shown that treatment with 830nm lasers can increase the body’s natural production of endorphins—pain-relieving chemicals that contribute to comfort and overall well-being. Lower-powered lasers were found to have less effect in this regard.
Why MicroLight?
MicroLight was the first company to receive FDA clearance for cold laser therapy in the U.S. Their handheld devices are designed for ease of use, safety, and effectiveness. With a precise wavelength and power combination, the MicroLight system delivers dependable results in reducing pain and inflammation—without the risk of burns or injury.
